Alexander III became ill with nephritis in 1894, and died of this disease at the Livadia Palace on
1 November [O.S. 20 October] 1894.
His remains were interred at the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Nicholas II.
